With wide-sweeping changes to the NHL19 Gaming World Championship structure, EA hired us to create social assets that could help communicate the changes in a clear, functional infographic and supporting social assets.

Vainglory Character Paint-Overs • Illustration & Composition

We were tasked with creating marketing assets for a Vainglory PPC campaign, that featured hero artwork that had never been seen in the game. I was provided model renders (as seen below) and a library of pre-existing background assets. By incorporating lighting effects, painting techniques, and special effects, I was able to create unique imagery that was engaging to existing players, aspirational to new players and was unique in both approach and execution.

Vainglory Worlds 2017

EVENT BRANDING and STORYTELLING

The culmination of Vainglory Esports in 2017 for Super Evil Mega Corp was the Vainglory World Championships in Singapore.

While Number29 played a central role in the branding, marketing and production for the event itself, one of the more exciting facets of this massive project was our storytelling components leading up to the event.

Number29 oversaw the complete production of the final videos, holding shooting b-roll and interviews in San Francisco, Las Vegas, Austin, and Singapore. Number29 oversaw the production schedule, and working with an external editing team, maintaining an aggressive production schedule, over the course of four weeks to deliver a total of 6 spotlight videos, highlighting a total of 12 teams.

Vainglory Esports Events

Event Design • Comms, Broadcast Assets & Physical Goods

The culmination of the Vainglory8 competitive league is a seasonal championship to act as qualification rounds for the annual World Championship tournament. Number29 was tasked with the job to develop the look and feel of each event, from the pre-event assets and communications, broadcast overlays, transitions and animations, down to the physical goods that are given away and sold at the event itself.

Vainglory League

CREATIVE DIRECTION • Complete Brand Redesign

In March 2015, I was approached by the VGL (vaingloryleague.com) to take over creative control of their organization in order to help legitimize their presence within the Vainglory community, and it’s burgeoning esport scene. The success of this initial push helped lead them to be picked up by Super Evil Megacorp as the premier regional provider for Vainglory competitive play.

In August 2015, with the initial success of my efforts on the VGL branding, we embarked on the Season 2 refresh. This refresh saw the development of a brand new website (designed and built by Number29), and all new assets and brand identifiers.

Gankstars Rebranding

BRAND DEVELOPMENT and EVOLUTION

Number29 was hired by grassroots esports organization, Gankstars to complete a full 360° brand development project.

The joint goal of this project was to reposition the Gankstars brand as a more playful, esports/ lifestyle brand. Our process was to approach it as a sort of repackaging attempt, to allow Gankstars visual language to communicate their new positioning, and allow them to stand out in the effects-heavy, esports market. Some additional consideration was to lighten the brand to feel brighter, happier and more appealing to a mainstream audience.  Gankstars as an organization is focused on being the best in their category, but remaining humble and being able to not take themselves too seriously. As the brand receives a more global roll-out, emphasis on photography and language will play an increasingly important role in their communications.
